Temple Grandin
Temple Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 29, 1947. She is autistic, a professor at Colorado State University, a best-selling author, inventor of the ‘Hug Box”, which helps people with autism to calm down (similar to a hug), and a livestock consultant. Grandin was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 years old in 1949, but the doctors believed that she had brain damage and was placed in nursery school. She began to speak at the age of 4 years old. Grandin says that her years in junior high and high school were not the most pleasant years because she was picked on and bullied because of her disability. She graduated boarding school (where she developed a close friendship with her science teacher Dr. Carlock. She then went on to Franklin Pierce College to earn her bachelors degree in psychology, then her masters degree in animal science at Arizona State University, and finally her doctoral degree in animal science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Temple Grandin is famous for creating the “Hug Box”. The Hug Box is what Grandin made to calm herself down when she had tantrums. The Box mimics a hug. She created this idea while at her aunts ranch in the summer. She had gone inside a “Hug Box” for cows that was used to calm them down before being moved into a pen. She later built her own while at college. She is also famous for creating a “Cattle Dip” that had corrals. This Dip let the cattle to a small pool of water to be washed before being slaughtered. It was designed to lead them to the water in a more calm fashion because it followed a curved formation which the cows followed calmly without panic.
What happens when you see an obstacle as an opportunity really depends on the person and situation. If you really want to take the obstacle go ahead, but there will be challenges along the way. Although, if you don’t want to take the obstacle, that’s fine, because there will be more opportunities equal or even better to the one that you passed.
